With the release of iTunes 10, Apple has added a new feature to the program, setting a new platform for social networking. Known as Ping, the new service takes on the features of wildly popular sites like Facebook and Twitter, and incorporates it into the world of iTunes.
Marketed as “a social network for music,” Ping allows you to follow your friends as well as your favorite artists and view what types of music they listen to. For example, the official page for Ping showcases a screenshot of the profile page for Lady Gaga. Not only can you view posts, videos and photos from the pop sensation, but you can also see what music she likes. The same goes for friends and other artists that you follow as well. In addition, you can see when artists you follow are playing concerts nearby and buy tickets through LiveNation. And, as expected, there is always the option of buying music through iTunes.
Ping is certainly a useful tool not only for music lovers but artists as well. With a new social network specifically made with music in mind, many artists are sure to stray away from the less music oriented Facebook as well as Myspace. Without a doubt, the question on everyone’s mind is not if but how successful Ping will be in the months to come.
